Building Bulletins deal with the design of school buildings to meet the ventilation requirements of both The School Premises Regulations and the Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation).

Requirements and Standards

BB90 Internal lighting recommendations include:

• Average Daylight Factor between 2 to 5%
• Uniformity Ratio of 0.8 or View of the sky
• Average lux levels between 300 to 500
• Limiting Glare Index of 19

BB101 Ventilation of School Buildings, including reduced levels of CO2 concentrations, which should not exceed:

• The maximum concentration of carbon dioxide should not exceed 5000 ppm during the teaching day.
• At any occupied time, including teaching, the occupants should be able to lower the concentration of carbon dioxide to 1000 ppm.

BB101 includes standards for summertime overheating as follows:

• a) There should be no more than 120 hours when the air temperature in the classroom rises above 28°C.
• b) The average internal to external temperature difference should not exceed 5°C (i.e. the internal air temperature should be no more than 5°C above the external air temperature on average).
• c) The internal air temperature when the space is occupied should not exceed 32°C.

In order to show that the proposed school will not suffer overheating two of these three criteria must be met.” Source BB101
