What is it?

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the first sustainability rating scheme for the built environment and has contributed to the strong focus in the UK on sustainability in building design, construction and operation.

BREEAM is an international environmental assessment rating for buildings that was established in the UK since 1990. BREEAM is an international method with over 250,000 certified buildings and more than a million registered.

A BREEAM assessment uses industry standard measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks. The categories used include:

• Energy and CO2 emissions
• Water Use
• Health and Well-being
• Pollution
• Transport
• Materials
• Waste
• Ecology

BREEAM® “…provides assurance to interested party that a building’s BREEAM rating, at the time of certification, accurately reflects its performance against the BREEAM standard.” BREEAM Technical manual version SD 5076 page 5.

The standard covers different kinds of commercial buildings such as: retail, offices, prisons, education, industrial, healthcare, courts, multi-residential among others.

Requirements

To achieve a particular BREEAM rating, the minimum overall percentage score must be achieved and the minimum standards, applicable on that target rating should be complied with.
